Completing Your Wedding Day Look with the Right Jewelry

You’ve found THE dress. Hallelujah! Now to complete your outfit. If you wish to add a veil, check out this post for an introduction. Today, we’re going to talk about wedding day jewelry.

Choosing the right wedding day jewelry — or deciding whether to wear any at all — depends on a number of factors. Let’s take a look at them.

Your Wedding

How would you describe your wedding? Steeped in tradition or sending off a more contemporary vibe? Ropes of pearls and diamond pendants are classic and will always look beautiful, now and for years to come, but if a more modern look is what you desire, consider pieces that have been worked into elaborate shapes and feature crystals in a range of colors.

Next, think about the event itself. Will it be a small, intimate gathering, or will it be a grand affair? If small, then perhaps simple wedding day jewelry is the better choice, but a large celebration may call for statement pieces.

Your Gown’s Necklines

By far the biggest consideration when choosing wedding day jewelry is the neckline of your chosen gown. Before we make any recommendations, let's just say: necklaces are always optional! You may prefer the clean, unfussy look of the gown's neckline, and that’s perfectly fine! If you think a necklace is in order, though, here are some suggestions:

Scoop, Strapless & Sweetheart

These necklines leave the neck, collarbones, and upper chest clear, making them the perfect place to showcase shorter necklace lengths, such as the choker, the collar, and the princess. If you go with a pendant, make sure you choose a length that ends a few inches above the neckline, to avoid overcrowding.

The Plunging V

Longer necklaces, such as the matinee, are great here. It’s still important that the bottom of the necklace stay above the neckline, though, and if wearing a pendant, look for a length that, when hanging, matches the angle of the plunging V.

High & Halter

High necklines and short necklaces don’t mix. They fight for the same space, making your neck look overcrowded. Depending on your gown’s fabric and decoration, a longer necklace (opera length) might go well here, or else skip the necklace altogether and focus on picking out some gorgeous drop, tassel, or chandelier earrings for your wedding day jewelry.

Halter necklines don’t usually mix with short necklaces either — but it depends on the exact cut of the halter. Give a few chokers and collars a try, but if they don’t seem to be working, forgo the necklace and pick out a stunning bracelet and stud earring set instead.

Illusion & Asymmetrical

Both of these styles have enough drama of their own. Skip the necklace and look for drop or dangle earrings that will accentuate your gown’s unusual shape and details.
